Pet Haus also supports and facilitates pet adoptions. Adopting a pet who is need of a good home is one of the best ways to improve the lives of pets in the community and to help you find your forever furry friend. Each pet available for adoption has its own unique story. Whether the animal was found as a stray and brought to the shelter, surrendered by kind owners who could not care for them anymore, or rescued from abuse, you can rescue a cat or dog from a lonely life in a small shelter kennel.
Annie’s Orphans is a program at Annie’s Orphans Dog Shelter in Durango. Hours are by appointment only, so please call ahead to schedule some time to interact with your next potential pet. This shelter is a no-kill dog shelter which began in 1985 as a home for retired sled dogs. It is now the oldest no-kill shelter in the Four Corners area. Anna and Bill Anderson have a compassion for animals in distress, but also for any other situation and animal that needs a permanent home. They now have a capacity to house 70 dogs in a safe haven from abandonment, neglect, and abuse.
The shelter remains at full capacity even when dogs are being adopted regularly, so they need your help. For those with severe health problems or those too traumatized to adjust to adoption, Annie’s Orphans becomes their permanent home. Financial assistance in providing food and supplies is always welcome and needed. The three main needs of the shelter are volunteers, donations, and of course, to adopt the dogs that reside there. Check out their page www.anniesk9orphans.org of featured dogs, which changes rapidly as new dogs arrive and other dogs are placed for adoption.
The La Plata Humane Society has an average of 20 dogs and cats available for adoption at any given time. They have pets that fit every person’s lifestyle—be sure to stop in and visit with a dog or cat to find the perfect pet for your family. You must be at least 21 years old with a valid driver’s license to adopt.
If you have other dogs, you must bring them in to meet with the potential adoptee. You can fill out and submit an adoption form online, then give them a call so they are aware of your application and review it quickly, addressing any questions they have. You can put a hold on a dog or cat for 24 hours for a $20, but that does not go towards the adoption fee. Prices vary according to the age of the dog and how long the dog has been in the shelter. All adoptions include spaying or neutering, along with a microchip and several other essential health services.
